Body fat percentage explained: healthy ranges and how it is estimated
Body fat percentage is the share of your bodyweight made up of fat tissue — both the essential fat your organs and hormones need and the storage fat that accumulates. It describes your body better than weight does, and it is harder to measure honestly than most apps admit. This guide covers the ranges, the methods and their error, and what actually moves the number.
Essential fat versus storage fat
A minimum amount of fat is structural: it cushions organs, insulates nerves and supports hormone production. Essential fat is roughly 3% of bodyweight in men and 10–13% in women, and going near those floors is associated with hormonal disruption, menstrual irregularity and loss of bone density.
Everything above that is storage fat — the part a fat-loss phase targets.
Reference ranges for adults
Commonly cited bands, which differ slightly by source and rise modestly with age.
- Men — essential 2–5%, athletic 6–13%, fit 14–17%, average 18–24%, above 25% generally classed as excess
- Women — essential 10–13%, athletic 14–20%, fit 21–24%, average 25–31%, above 32% generally classed as excess
How each method works
DEXA passes two X-ray energies through the body and separates fat, lean tissue and bone; it is the practical reference standard and typically accurate within 1–2%.
Air displacement and hydrostatic weighing estimate body density from volume, then convert density to fat percentage with a population equation.
Skinfold calipers measure subcutaneous fat at fixed sites and feed those into an equation — accurate to roughly 3% when the same trained person measures every time, considerably worse otherwise.
Bioelectrical impedance sends a small current through the body and infers composition from resistance; hydration, food, exercise and skin temperature all shift the reading, so it is a trend tool.

Measuring so the number means something
- Use one method throughout a phase; never compare a DEXA to a scale reading
- Measure first thing in the morning, before food and training
- Take tape measurements at the same anatomical landmarks each time
- Repeat every 8–12 weeks, not weekly
- Record the method alongside the number so future-you can interpret it
How to reduce body fat without losing muscle
The combination that consistently works is a moderate calorie deficit of 10–20%, protein at 1.6–2.2 g per kg of bodyweight, two to four resistance sessions a week, and enough daily movement that the deficit does not have to come entirely from food.
Aggressive deficits without resistance training lower bodyweight while leaving body fat percentage nearly unchanged, because muscle goes with the fat. That is the mechanism behind 'I lost 8 kg and still look the same'.
Limitations and health context
Field estimates are estimates. Pregnancy, oedema, very high muscle mass and older age all reduce the accuracy of the equations, and no method diagnoses anything on its own.
