1. Haseen dillruba
This iconic movie was among one of the earliest psychological horror movies to be made in India.
A must watch for everyone, Haseen Dillruba has left a huge impact on several generations and is definitely worth watching.
Based on renowned playwright Kaifi Azmi’s hauntingly beautiful story Haseena.
It takes you on a rollercoaster ride into madness where everything seems normal but gradually veers into something completely different and mind-bending.

2. Ek Hasina Thi
One of Bollywood’s first psychological thrillers, Ek Hasina Thi is an excellent movie to start with if you’re new to watching these kinds of movies.
Directed by Sriram Raghavan, it tells a story about paranoia and fear.
The film focuses on Zarina Wahab as police inspector Durga Prasad Verma, who goes undercover after being informed that her lookalike, Usha Mehra (also played by Zarina Wahab), has been kidnapped.
Though both look exactly alike, they are polar opposites one is a happy-go-lucky homebody while the other is a high-flying party girl with shady connections.
Jism (The Body) is a 2003 psychological thriller film.
The film is directed by Pooja Bhatt and stars John Abraham, Bipasha Basu and Urmila Matondkar.
Set in contemporary Mumbai, it tells a tale of an intense passion that soon turns into obsession and finally madness.
It was critically acclaimed upon release, even being selected as India’s official entry to be considered for nomination for best foreign language film at the 77th Academy Awards.
But did not manage to garner a nomination.
4. Murder (2004 film)
Murder is a 2004 Indian psychological thriller film starring Sanjay Dutt, Aftab Shivdasani and Esha Deol.
The movie was directed by Sanjay Gupta who also wrote it with Saurabh Shukla and Arshad Sayed.
It tells the story of a blind photographer (Dutt) who falls for his female assistant (Deol), and how he kills her husband (Shivdasani) after finding out that he has been abusing her.
This was said to be Aftab Shivdasani’s second last performance before retiring from Bollywood after marriage.
Even though he made a comeback as an actor later on, he has always stayed away from any role which requires him to show his eyes.
5. Raaz (2002 film)
Raaz is a 2002 Hindi psychological horror film directed by Vikram Bhatt.
The film features Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea and Emraan Hashmi as lead actors.
It also stars Paresh Rawal, Rahul Dev and Isha Koppikar in supporting roles.
Raaz went on to become one of the highest grossing films of 2002, along with being critically acclaimed for its storyline and performances.
The film was also remade into Malayalam language under same name with almost same story line but slightly changed cast.
6. Shaitan (2011 film)
Shaitan is a 2011 Indian psychological thriller film directed by Bejoy Nambiar and produced by Vikramaditya Motwane.
It is an adaptation of Hollywood film Se7en, starring Rajeev Khandelwal and John Abraham.
The story revolves around an encounter between two cops, one good and one evil as they investigate murders.
The film also stars Tapsee Pannu, Tena Desae, Gulshan Devaiya and Chunky Pandey in supporting roles.
7. 1920 (film)
1920 is a 2007 Indian supernatural horror film directed by Vikram Bhatt and produced by Firoz Nadiadwala.
The film features Sharman Joshi, Meera Chopra and Aditya Om in lead roles.
The story involves two step-brothers whose father is believed to be responsible for a series of murders and suicides around an apartment building located at Bombay, India.
They along with their friend attempt to unravel mystery behind deaths.
1920 was released on 30 September 2007 and received mixed response from critics upon release.
The film became a sleeper hit grossing ₹40 crore (US$5 million) at box office against its ₹10 crore budget (US$1 million).
It was also declared as one of highest grossers of that year.
